RT80 SERIES REFLECTIVE TRIM

In the 1990’s, 3M Canada introduced the concept of a yellow/silver/yellow trim on flame resistant (FR) coveralls. This FR trim served a dual purpose, the yellow offered enhanced daytime visibility and the retroreflective silver served for dusk, low light, and dark conditions. The yellow/silver/yellow trim used at the time was 9587, a trim that was FR and designed for the fireman bunker gear. Soon this yellow/silver/yellow solution became the norm, but there was a significant challenge with it as it could not withstand industrial washing for the Oil & Gas and Utilities market, which heavily soiled garments needed, to be cleaned.

9587 - Early Beginnings

The yellow/silver/yellow trim used at the time was 9587, a trim that was FR and designed for the fireman bunker gear. Soon this yellow/silver/yellow solution became the norm, but there was a significant challenge with it as it could not withstand industrial washing for the oil and gas and utilities market, which heavily soiled garments needed to be cleaned.

With Davey Textile Solutions’ extensive background in textiles, we set out to solve the challenge to develop a fabric that would meet the criteria for visibility and flame resistant standards, but durable enough for industrial washers, and then use a 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material for the retroreflectivity.

OUR DESIGNS

In 2004, the RT80 triple trim was born, and it was the FIRST innovation of a cloth base trim that met all the requirements of triple trim solutions for flame resistant garments, and strong enough to withstand industrial washing.

The first generation of the RT80 series was RT80 220C M1000. It was designed to have a fabric base with 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material stitched on, and 7/16″ of the fabric folded on the back. The design was innovative for its time and filled the need for reflective that could withstand industrial washing.

Generation 2: RT80 220C M3000

2004 was also the year where we developed the RT80 220C M3000. We developed a method of heat transferring the 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material onto the fabric base with a 7/16″ fold on the back.

Today’s most popular trim is the RT80 220C N3000. We developed this design in 2010 by adhering 9740 3M™ Scotchlite™ Reflective Material to our narrow-width fabric.

The RT80 series is the leader in the industry for cloth based triple trims, built with quality and to the highest standards. The RT80 series complies to both visibility standards of CSA Z96 -2015 and ANSI 107-2015 and certified to FR standards of CGSB 155.20 and NFPA 2112.
